Few Turmeric Spices Can Contain Toxic Lead. They are Harmful For Our Health
Consuming turmeric spices is healthy. But there are at least three manufacturers who have been forced “voluntary” to recalls of their turmeric products. Why? Because of the dangerous levels of lead found in their spices.
Everyone consuming turmeric products from these questionable sources have the risk of eating dangerous quantities of a toxic heavy metal. There is connection to bone disorders, brain damage and heart damage.
Lead is common element in low-quality turmeric powders and turmeric products. We can find very large amount of turmeric in soil with high-lead content. It is around or in India and China, and then imported into USA. Remember, just because one product is labeled as packaged, processed, or distributed in the U.S. it does NOT mean that it was grown there. Lead can wreak havoc on our vital organs and nervous system due to its ability to accumulate within the body. Even the FDA now acknowledges that, “Too much [lead exposure] can cause health problems, including delayed physical and mental development as well as learning deficiencies. Infants, pregnant women and young children should avoid lead exposure.”
The FDA still won’t claim how much lead is too much.
The FDA checks food and supplement manufacturers across America. They visit their facilities and take samples of their products for testing via ICP-OES or ICP-MS. Yet, shockingly, or surprisingly, the FDA still refuses to tell us how much lead actually “we need”to trigger a recall.
There are now 6 brands of turmeric spices being recalled because of the lead contamination.
So far, there have been no injuries or illnesses reported from the high lead levels in the turmeric. However, Gel Spice, Inc., the company expanding the recall, is taking precautions.
The FDA lists the following products with potential lead contamination:
Lead Exposure – What Are The Dangers?
Poisoning of lead from the ground turmeric potentially can be very serious to our health. It is most dangerous for young children, pregnant women, the elderly and frail, and for those with compromised immune systems.
Health line gives the following symptoms of repeated lead exposure:
- abdominal pain
- abdominal cramps
- aggressive behavior
- sleep problems
- loss of developmental skills in children

Children who were on lead exposure over a long period of time may develop intellectual disabilities. If you think that maybe you or your child has been exposed to lead through the contaminated turmeric spices, immediately contact your doctor. The advice will be to make a blood test and determine the levels of lead in your blood. The result will tell whether or not you need further treatment.
