Is Tofu Healthy? Here Are 6 Reasons Why You Should Avoid It!

If you eat meat, you probably have never tasted tofu. If you’re a vegetarian or vegan, it is probably a regular part of your diet. Over the years tofu has become more popular, especially for those who decided not to consume meat. Maybe you think it is a healthy food but the truth is that tofu isn’t healthy as you think.

What Is Tofu?

Tofu is a soy product. We all know that soy is one of the most commonly genetically modified foods. This product is made by curdling soy milk and then simply pressing the resulting curds into white and soft blocks.  In terms of nutritional content tofu is excellent. That is why a lot of people consider it as a healthy food. But tofu is far from beneficial to our body even with these nutrients that it contains.

This Is Why and How Tofu Can Damage Our Body:

  1. It is GMO Product

90% of all soy grown in the USA is genetically modified. Monsanto Roundup Ready soybeans makes the majority of soy products, which are genetically engineered. GMO foods have connection to many health problems. GMO’s can damage our digestive system and kill off the good bacteria in the gut.

  1. It’s a Product that Contains Phytoestrogens

This soy product contains plant-based estrogens. It has the power to block normal estrogen production in our body. These compounds are in fact connected to several health issues, like the breast cancer for example.

  1. It Disrupts The Thyroid

Soy also contains goitrogenic compounds. They actually block thyroid hormones and interfere with thyroid hormone production. All that can lead to hypothyroidism. Studies suggest that the soy products consumption can negatively affect our body, starting at a very early age. A 2004 study showed that parents who were feeding their children  with soy formula had a prolonged increase of thyroid stimulating hormone, comparing to those infants who were fed non-soy formula.

  1. It Causes Cognitive Problems

Soy tofu has connection to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. One study found that eating high amounts of this product is linked to a worse memory. Another study found a strong relationship between two or more servings of tofu per week and “accelerated brain aging.”

 

  1. It Easily Causes Digestive Problems

Tofu and other unfermented soy products contain strong enzyme inhibitors. These block the action of trypsin. It is a pancreatic enzyme, which our body needs together with other proteolytic enzymes for protein digestion. Enzyme inhibitors can cause problems with the pancreas and  disrupt a healthy digestive process.

  1. Contributes To Heart Issues

Researches and scientists looked deeper into the effect of a soy-rich diet on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. It is a condition when the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick. In this condition the heart makes an effort to pump blood. Maybe we are hearing all the time that tofu is a heart-healthy food. But this study showes the opposite results.
