Are All Vapor Rubs Natural?

When stuffy nose hits, many of us simply reach cream or vapor rubs that we can find. At first it may look natural because they actually contain ingredients like cedar leaf, eucalyptus essential oil, and/or nutmeg. But, besides these ingredients they also contain some nasty chemicals, like synthetic camphor, turpentine and petrolatum.

The petrolatum is derived from petroleum, and people classify it as harmful or toxic and as a high human health priority . And while camphor is a naturally occurring substance, this contains synthetic camphor which is made from turpentine that’s distilled to yield pinene.

So, these small jars don’t look as natural as you thought, right? If you’re searching for something simple, safe and natural, then this homemade vapor rub is perfect solution. But be careful! Very young children, under the age of 3, should not use eucalyptus or peppermint essential oil.

Peppermint essential oil

We all think that peppermint have the power to cool. And it does cool the place but due to its high menthol content, it also warms and stimulates. Mint has the power to activate cold receptors which are in the nasal passages that actually promote nice, clear breathing. In the lymphatic system, it can also increase the flow of fluids to help our body clear out congestion and then heal faster. It moves fluids into the connective tissue, and has a regenerative and restorative effect on our immune system.

Eucalyptus essential oil

Everything that is related to sinus, eucalyptus can heal. We use this oil for bronchitis, asthma and even tuberculosis. It works by increasing the amount of oxygen absorbed by the respiratory system. It stimulates and encourages circulation and also increases the oxygen that makes it to our body’s cells. Eucalyptus can also help get the excess congestion out of our body.

Beeswax and coconut oil

We make this homemade vapor rub with beeswax and coconut oil because they offer salve and thick consistency. Here, the purpose is to linger on the chest so we can breathe it in easily for lasting relief. Coconut oil also has mild anti- microbial properties, so it gives some extra support to the immune system when we apply it to the chest.
